This is the first of The New Architects’ series, ‘Make Your Own Life’. In this post and video episode we will take you on a journey and share with you the technique of how to make your own laundry soap.
Using this technique will save you money (less than a penny per load of laundry) and take you one step closer to being self reliant – because who needs corporations to tell you how to clean your clothes?
(Video after the directions)
What you need:
- 2 Gallon Bucket
- 1/2 cup Borax
- 1/2 cup Super Washing Soda
- Your favorite Soap
- Essential Oils
What to Do:
Take your bar of soap and grate 3/4 of it. Once you have grated all the soap. Take a pot and add 6 cups of water on low heat. Add the soap shavings to the water and slowly melt the soap. DO NOT let the soap boil. Stir.
Once the soap has melted add the washing soda and the borax and stir until it is dissolved. Continue to stir until the mixture thickens. Once the mixture thickens remove it from the heat.
Add the thickened mixture to your bucket and then add your essential oils (essential oils are optional – If you want to have a scent to your laundry).
Now add one gallon of HOT tap water plus six cups of water. Give it a couple more stirs and then let it sit over night.
The mixture will thicken over night. Depending on the environment (weather) and the type of soap you used your mixture will either be completely thick or it will be runny or it might be thick on top and watery on the bottom. These are all normal looks and feels for your newly made soap. You can either mix it up more to give a uniform look to your soap or just leave it – the choice is yours.
You are now done making your laundry soap. All you have to do now is scoop out 1/2 cup of the mixture per load of laundry and sit back, relax and be happy that you just released yourself from the grips of the corporate laundry system.
If you want these steps in video form you are in luck because Thomas and I put together this video to show you how to make laundry soap. Watch it, share it, and send us your ideas!
