Brain-dead, flesh-eating people wander aimlessly through an empty field. SHOOTER ONE takes position behind a stack of hay bales and signals to his teammates to circle the perimeter of the field. They’re not worried about the zombies; they’re protecting their base from POACHERS. A ZOMBIE moans quietly when SHOOTER TWO bumps into an empty fuel barrel. POACHER ONE fires at SHOOTER TWO and a battle begins.

The stage is paintball 2013-style, and the show is human vs human vs zombie.

Create Your Own Paintball Experience

 While TV and movies find new ways to end the world with zombifying viruses, paintball fanatics are capitalizing on the trend by creating post-apocalyptic paintball experiences. One company in South Surrey, British Columbia created the ”Zombie Combat Zone,” which sold out in 2012 and left 350 people on a waiting list, notes LangleyTimes.com. The game’s creator is looking for a larger venue for 2013.

Undead Paintball Zombie Safari in North Carolina pits players of all ages against the walking dead. Because players are fighting zombies, they do not shoot each other, and they wear no protective gear, making it suitable for children five years and up.

Check the Law

Before you begin setting up your own game, check local regulations concerning such events. You might need a permit or license to conduct a game, and it is worthwhile to check what your local government has to say about paintball guns as well. Do this first so you avoid any unnecessary liability headaches later on.

Set Up Your Course

Your goal is to create a zombie apocalypse – or at least the feeling of one. Once you understand what you are aiming for, you can begin to gather the necessary tools to create it. There are three main stages you will go through when creating your course:

Planning – This is really the most important part of the process. With a good plan, you can create a game that is fun, challenging and you can actually build. According to Paintball Review World, you can design a game using paper and pencil or with a computer program like Google’s SketchUp. Make sure you take all your resources into consideration. You will only have so much space and material, so make it count. Remember that zombies are meant to scare, so design your game in stages, where players will face new challenges, and not just the same thing repeatedly.

Building – This is where it helps to have friends. Hopefully the area where you set up your game has natural variation, like trees and hills that you can work with. Otherwise you will have to purchase or build special obstacles, which can be expensive.

Testing – Zombie apocalypse games are more challenging to conduct than the standard paintball battles. You cannot just let a bunch of players loose to shoot one another. You have to train your “zombies” on how to act, and make sure your layout and game design produces enough scares. If it is not working, go back to the planning stage and try again until you get what you want.

Take Care of Your Gear

When you clean your gear, remember that what comes out must go back in. Size matters. If you replace an o-ring, replace it with the proper size. An Apple Rubber rings chart that includes metric and non-metric sizes is very helpful. Dried and cracked o-rings are the number one reason paintball guns lose velocity; the rubber seals prevent leakage so air pressure is well-maintained.

Follow the advice of AMS TV, who explain how to fix a leaky o-ring on their YouTube channel, keeping your paintballs humming along instead of dropping in the dirt.

Remember to Play Safe

Even when no one is shooting at you, it is a good idea to wear protective clothing and eyewear. Friendly fire does happen, and it still hurts.

We kick off today’s show with a chat about the trumped up idea of “Specified Complexity.” This is an argument which is new to all three of us and we were interested in learning about it. The so-called “theory” has a lot of the trappings of a legitimate argument, complex mathematical equations; apparently reasonable amount of “studies;” and, of course, is complicated enough to make someone’s head spin. However, the whole concept is utterly bogus! Actual scholars in fields like mathematics and complex systems theory seem to feel like the idea of specified complexity is nothing more than bogus math and arguments from ignorance.

Bob and I then get into a series of rants about the fact that North Carolina is debating legislation to create an official state religion, cheerleaders with bible quotes, and hipster Jesus. All of this, with the usual wit and demeanor of our characteristic selves (for which I apologize!). Without giving too much more away, I welcome you all back to our little show. ‘Lords of Salem’ — April 2013

Producer Jason Blum, known for his work in “Paranormal Activity” and “Insidious”, helps bring another Rob Zombie nightmare to life. The movie stars Sheri Moon Zombie, Bruce Davison, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Ken Foree and Dee Wallace, many of whom have previously acted in Zombie’s other films like “House of 1,000 Corpses” and “The Devil’s Rejects,” notes IMDb. The movie is pulled together with a crew whose experience includes work in movies like “Halloween” and “Grindhouse.”

In the movie, Sheri Moon Zombie stars as a radio DJ named Heidi who is sent a mysterious box which claims to be “a gift from the Lords.” The box leads to an unraveling of dark mysteries that surround the apartment duplex and drives her to insanity. Fans anticipate an original story and twisted experience.

’7500′ — May 2013

Passengers aboard flight 7500 encounter a terrifying supernatural force over the Pacific Ocean. The film is famed Japanese horror director Takashi Shimizu’s first English-language film. With the help of producer, friend and experienced horror-movie producer Taka Ichise, and the sound mastery of Oscar winner and California audio engineering school graduate Paul N.J. Ottosson, fans and critics expect a win. Leslie Bibb, Ryan Kwanten and Amy Smart star in the film. The film was originally planned for release in 2012, but the date was moved back to May 2013.

‘You’re Next’ — July 2013

Horror director Adam Wingard, who worked on horror favorites “The ABC’s of Death” and “V/H/S” brings “You’re Next” to theaters in the United States. Although the film originally debuted internationally in 2011, 2013 is the first time it’s available to U.S. audiences. According to IMDb, Simon Barrett, AJ Bowen, Sharni Vinson and Joe Swanberg take viewers to an anniversary getaway gone completely wrong. The characters, the Davison family, quickly learn they are being watched when they are attacked by a mysterious gang of killers wearing animal masks, who slowly move their attacks from the home’s exterior to interior.

‘The Conjuring’ — July 2013

Based on the a true story of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, “The Conjuring” is pure terror. The movie tells the tale of a family who recently moved into a New England farm house, only to find that they are sharing the property with strong, hateful, spiritual entities. James Wan, who directed “Insidious 2″ and wrote the Saw movies, directed the movie. Producer Rob Cowan, who’s also experienced in horror films, helps translate the horrific encounters to the silver screen. Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga and Ron Livingston star in the film.

After an extended hiatus, we have returned to discuss the inherent goodness of the free market.

Just kidding.

We started off our discussion by addressing the Hobby Lobby resistance to complying with the Affordable Healthcare Act. We discussed some of the popular misconceptions regarding contraception and the healthcare law, the tragedy of the Hobby Lobby employees being denied healthcare and/or losing their jobs, and the religious person’s right to practice their faith through their vocation.

The conversation then shifted to the talking point in conservative politics about the inherent wisdom and goodness of the free market. While we agreed that the government was not necessarily the best alternative to the free market, we concluded that the free market is neither altruistic nor benevolent; rather, it is greedy and ambivalent.

Finally, after months of waiting…and waiting…and waiting…and waiting…and more waiting…and then Jason moved…and we waited more…we FINALLY began our discussion about microfinancing and evaluated the pros and cons of microfinancing for helping the world’s poor. For further reading, Matt recommended Banker to the Poor by Muhammed Yunus (available on Audible), the founder of Grameen bank, one of the organizations which does microfinancing.

“Oz The Great and Powerful”

“Oz The Great and Powerful” is a fantasy film adapted from the novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum. James Franco stars as circus magician Oscar Diggs who is whisked to the effervescent Land of Oz. In Oz, Diggs’ meets three witches, faces good and evil, and uses his powers and ingenuity to become the great and powerful Oz. (Release date: March 8, 2013).

The movie also stars Anthony Mackie (“The Adjustment Bureau”) as Coleman Harris, a switchblade-wielding cop who proudly patrols one of the most crime-ridden areas of the city; Giovanni Ribisi (“Avatar”) as the force’s Conwell Keeler, an electronics expert who takes as much pleasure in fixing his son’s bike as he does tinkering with experimental, military-grade equipment; Michael Peña(“Battle Los Angeles”) as Officer Kennard’s over-eager sidekick, Navidad Ramirez; Robert Patrick (“Flags of Our Fathers”) as Officer Max Kennard, a deadly cop who patrols the Olvera Street beat; and Mireille Enos as O’Mara’s wife, Connie.

The screenplay is by Will Beall (TV’s “Castle”), based on the book Gangster Squad by Paul Lieberman.  The film is being produced by Dan Lin (“Sherlock Holmes”), Kevin McCormick (“The Lucky One”) and Michael Tadross (“Arthur”).  The executive producers are Ruben Fleischer, Paul Lieberman and Bruce Berman.

Joining Fleischer behind the scenes are the director’s regular collaborators, production designer Maher Ahmad and editor Alan Baumgarten (“30 Minutes or Less,” “Zombieland”), as well as editor James Herbert (the “Sherlock Holmes” films), Academy Award^®-winning director of photography Dion Beebe (“Memoirs of a Geisha”) and Oscar^®-nominated costume designer Mary Zophres (“True Grit”).  The film’s composer is Steve Jablonsky (“Transformers: Dark of the Moon”).

Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, a Lin Pictures/Kevin McCormick Production, “Gangster Squad.”  The film opens nationwide on January 11, 2013 and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

When Zombie Popcorn was asked to review some very stylish ear buds from a company in the UK, called BassBuds, I was very concerned.

When it comes to headphones I am very picky because I want comfort and great sound quality. I normally hate the ear buds style headphones because they are uncomfortable. Normally, it takes about 3 or 4 songs and my ears start feeling sore.  The reason I said, ‘normally’ is because I think I have found the very first ear bud that does not make my ears sore – and I wore them all day during an 8 hour work day. (Only taking them off for meetings, phone calls, going to the loo, etc). Wait, I am jumping ahead of myself, lets back up to the day BassBuds arrived at my doorstep.

It was a lovely Saturday afternoon when I opened my mailbox to find a package from the United Kingdom. I opened the brown package to find what appeared to be a large jewelry box. On the top shined a red and white logo that had two “B”s, one red and one reversed and white. Under the logo read, “Bassbuds Classics‘. When I opened the box, it was like someone just proposed to me and I was opening a giant ring box. The first thing I saw was a ‘Certificate of Authenticity’ attached with a red ribbon. When I removed the certificate I found the BassBuds nicely organized in its holding case. A crystal sparkled in the sunlight coming in through the window. At that moment my wife walked by and said, “BLING BLING!”

What makes BassBuds unique and stand out from the rest is their wide range of style. Not only do you have an almost unlimited amount of colors to pick from but every BassBuds comes with genuine Swarovski Elements fine loose cut crystal embedded on the oustide of the ear bud.  When I say a range of style I mean, if there is a color you want they will have it, from blue to eclectic to nu skool.

So, they look good – how do they sound?

The Bassbuds have a built in microphone and a BB controller so you can use them with your smart phone. The controls are easy. Push the button once to answer/end calls or to pause/play music, twice to go to the next track, etc. As I mentioned before I am not a fan of ear buds but was taken by surprise on how comfortable they are and don’t let the name fool you, I didn’t find the bass to be overdone. I have tested out some headphones where they tried too hard with adding bass the headset. BassBuds have a good sound balance, you are not going to get studio quality sounds out of these but for a smartphone, you will be more than happy with the sound.

So, if you are looking for a good stocking-stuffer this year or just want to pick up a new pair of headphones, with some bling attached, then I would recommend picking up BassBuds – because it is your colour, your style.

The screenplay for “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is by Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson & Guillermo del Toro.  Jackson is also producing the film, together with Carolynne Cunningham, Zane Weiner and Fran Walsh.  The executive producers are Alan Horn, Toby Emmerich, Ken Kamins and Carolyn Blackwood, with Boyens and Eileen Moran serving as co-producers.

Under Jackson’s direction, “The Hobbit” Trilogy has been shot in 3D 48 frames-per-second and will be released in High Frame Rate (HFR) 3D, other 3D formats, IMAX and 2D.  Production has taken place at Jackson’s own facilities in Miramar, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.

Among the creative behind-the-scenes team returning to Jackson’s crew are director of photography Andrew Lesnie, production designer Dan Hennah, conceptual designers Alan Lee and John Howe, composer Howard Shore and make-up and hair designer Peter King.  The film is edited by Jabez Olssen.  The costumes are designed by Ann Maskrey, Richard Taylor and Bob Buck.

Taylor is also overseeing the design and production of weaponry, armour and prosthetics which are once again being made by the award-winning Weta Workshop.  Weta Digital take on the visual effects for the films, led by the film’s visual effects supervisor, Joe Letteri.   Post production will take place at Park Road Post Production in Wellington.

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and the second and third films of the trilogy are productions of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM), with New Line managing production.  Warner Bros. Pictures is handling worldwide theatrical distribution, with select international territories as well as all international television distribution being handled by MGM.

Gibson All Day 

An actor, producer, model and R&B singer, Gibson has been very busy for a while. He is currently working on “Fast and Furious 6,” which is scheduled for release on May 24, 2013. Gibson is also working on another album and on the book “Manology” with Reverend Run, formerly of the 1980’s rap group Run DMC.

It seems like the performer himself is as in the dark as the fans of the films. “I don’t know,” Gibson said when asked in London if he will be back for the next film in the series. “Me and [Director] Michael Bay have been exchanging text messages and I hope it works out,” he said. It seems Gibson also wants to avoid what happened during the filming of “Fast 5” and “T3,” when he had to fly back-and-forth between Atlanta, Georgia and Puerto Rico almost daily to accommodate the filming of both movies.

Michael Bay, who initially indicated he would not return for a fourth “Transformers” movie, recently had a change of heart. Bay told the Huffington Post that he did not want someone else coming in and taking over what he started. Brian Goldner, the CEO of Hasbro (which owns the Transformers line of toys) said that disappointing toy sales after “T3” is the driving force behind the new movie having all new robot characters, along with many new human faces. Of course since there will be new characters, there will also be new storylines. But Bay has assured fans that their hero Optimus Prime will not be phased out, and Peter Cullen will reprise his voice.

All Together Now

Gibson felt a close camaraderie with all the former cast members, but believes the show must always go on despite the changing faces. “I started this…with Shia, Josh, Michael Bay and the team, and sometimes you lose a team member,” Gibson said in London. “For me not being part of ‘Transformers 4,’ if that’s what’s happening, it would really [mess] me up,” he said. Gibson commented that he was a big fan of Transformers toys during his childhood, noting the 1986 animated “Transformers: The Movie” as one of his favorite films of all-time.

No Pain, No Gain

Bay said “T4″ would “keep the history” of the previous three movies in place, while broadening the storyline and picking up where it left off in Chicago. Bay just finished shooting “Pain & Gain,” starring Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg. The relatively low-budget film has a scheduled release date of April 26, 2013. Bay’s focus is now solely on “T4,” and possibly reeling Gibson back in for one last dance.

The hugely popular show is not the only form of media to take advantage of the recent popularity of Zombies. Nearly 100 video games on iOs as well as pc and console are keeping zombies in our collective conscious.

With all of the talk about zombies, (that actually includes the CDC releasing a press release and a guide about surviving the zombie apocalypse) it seems like an opportune to get a seat on the bandwagon and present ways to survive the inevitable zombie apocalypse. You do not have to be the Zombie Response Team to make it through the end of the world. It does help to be them though; those people are awesome and have guns!

Buy Bollards

Once the world begins its descent into chaos, zombies are most likely the least of your worries. If you have survived, you most likely have food, water, guns and shelter. This makes you a target for armed gangs and bands of raiders. Raiders do not make friends or negotiate (see “Mad Max”) and they certainly do not knock when they come by. Consider buying bollards to protect your front and back door to prevent a raider or lone psycho from driving his vehicle through your house. Protecting your entryways is extremely important. This does not just include nailing plywood on your windows. Bollards can slow down most vehicles and at least provide another obstruction to impede a zombie hordes progress.

Watch the “Walking Dead” and Other Zombie Shows

Not only do zombie movies provide great entertainment, but they also show many creative ways to survive. Pick up tips from your favorite zombie slayers like the following:

• Always shoot for the head-unless you are a bad shot. Then you should shoot aim for the legs to buy time to escape. Although, if you are a bad shot, your fellow survivors may leave you behind or make sure you do not come back from that supply run.
• Learn coping skills. When the brains hit the fan, you will need to learn to deal with possible weirdoes and psychopaths. Rules get broken when zombies attack, so that means petty differences and disagreements are better left behind. On the other hand, you could always settle scores once your enemy is asleep.

Zombie flicks can be great fodder about what not to do as well. There are countless examples of people making mistakes in a zombie-infested world. Here are a few don’ts to avoid.

Making Noise

Zombies are scary; we get it. But for goodness sake, learn to zip the pie hole when zombies are sighted. Nothing sounds more delicious to a zombie than a screaming young blonde-haired woman that is too scantily clad.

Supplies

Surviving the inevitable coming of the walking dead is much like surviving any catastrophe, except for the whole “My neighbor turned into crazed, frothy, brain eating rotting corpse,” of course. Keeping a good supply of bottled water is important. So is keeping lighters or a reliable fire source to purify water, cook food and keep undead at bay. Here are a few things to prepare yourself with that you may not have thought of yet.

Get a Grip

This is the most important tip. Although catastrophes happen, and it is always a safe bet to prepare for a life changing event, chances are good, wait, no they are CERTAIN, that zombies will NOT walk the earth and come to gnaw on the noggin of your loved ones. But hey, the good news is that the third season “Walking Dead” is coming, and there are more than enough ways to get your zombie fix. Good luck!

Yes, I feel that we need new and more creative films coming down the pipeline.  When that pipeline brings Leatherface to me in 3D – I will put my arguments aside for a moment.  This will put us closer to having the top horror icon 3D collection – we have already had Friday the 13th part 3 in 3D, we have had Nightmare on Elm Street. Now with this film all we need is Halloween 3D. (It is coming.)

BEYOND THE GRAVE is the feature directorial debut of 33 years old filmmaker Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro, who also writes and produces. The film follows the post-apocalyptic journey of the Officer (Rafael Tombini) who hunts a mystical serial killer known as the Dark Rider (Adriano Basegio). Across wastelands populated by reanimated corpses, he will put his remaining sanity to the test against a nemesis that could have brought the end of the world. Shooter (Ricardo Seffner) and Nina (Amanda Grimaldi), a couple of teenagers, are the first living souls to cross paths with the policeman on his quest. The younglings have lost their loved ones to the maniac and also seek revenge.

Beyond the Grave is a breath of fresh air for zombie films with an added twist, the zombies are not the main feature creature.   If you love art-house films then you must check out Beyond the Grave.  I also have good news for you - Netflix just picked up this film and has just added it to their library.

The Collection (3D) is a short horror film from Enhanced Dimensions produced as part of the 2012 leg of The 48 Hour Film Project. Written, filmed and edited over the weekend of 18th -20th of May 2012 this is the first 3D entry to the 48 Hour Film Project outside of the US.
The film premiered at the Cameo Picturehouse in Edinburgh on 22nd May in glorious anaglyph 3D! The full 3D short is available online via the YouTube 3D Player for 3D TV, 3D Computer or a wide variety of other supported 3D platforms.

The cast include the brilliant Nick Cheales as the obsessive collector Professor Kit Young and an equally strong performance from Frasier Fulton as his young research assistant Julian Lamb. Nick and Fraser are scheduled to work together again later in 2012. The crew were again dragged in front of the cameras as extra’s including Dale Peet as the rather creepy “Pigboy”, Rhiannon Grist’s muddy feet and Andrew Murchie’s pierced bleeding brow!

The score is provided by Neil Warden who again managed to deliver a brilliantly suitable soundtrack enhancing the film’s menacing mood.

Andrew really understands how to work a 3D camera and get the most out of a shot and it shows in all of his works.  Check out the trailer for The Collection.

The claim shows up in the 13th century English legal work Fleta, which stated that “If, however, the woman should have conceived at the time alleged in the appeal, it abates, for without a woman’s consent she could not conceive.”

This idea has persisted even into the modern era through scientific ignorance and motivated reasoning. It isn’t just Rep. Akin which buys this load of garbage, just after the broadcast today we found out that the American Family Association backs Akin’s stance on rape 100%.

On Saturday, August 18th, Jeremy Shell brought Cazwell and Alaska to preform at Lola’s for a Pride after party.  I set up an interview with Cazwell a couple days before hand, expecting to do a quick Q&A.  So, I researched and had all my questions ready to go for that interview.

What I got was something I would have never dreamed of in my life – it was another rare moment.  I got to create and set up an interview environment (I am not going to give away the details – you have to watch the video below.)  that would bring for the first time EVER two amazing performers.  Never before have these two done an interview together and never before have they performed in public together. So, as Ru Paul would say, “The first time in Drag Queen History” Zombie Popcorn documented this very rare moment.  

What will Zombie Popcorn do with this?  Well, share with you of course.  Keep in mind, there is more footage than what is in the video below.  I decided not to post the entire show for two reasons;

1. If you like what you see in the video then do yourself and the performers a favor by going to support them next time they are live and buy their music.

You view yourself as a person with values – so them! Don’t make excuses for people to continue the injustices.

I think companies who won’t speak their hearts and pay others to do it for them are cowards and anti-gay. I would never label a people with a shared association, such as Christians to be across the board one view. To do so, would be foolish and dishonest. I may be equivocating in my abortion/gay marriage conversation. I think my general point stands regarding the levels of injustice in society that are supported by many corporations and not just Chick-Fil-A. I pull the abortion card only to say that there are U.S. “social issues” I have controversial opinions about, but I am not necessarily boycotting all of those organizations that support what I see as a terrible philosophical dehumanizing of human life. Maybe I SHOULD boycot them to be consistent, but most corporations are “mixed” when it comes to justice. I’m not going to single out Chick-Fil-A, especially when, in other areas, they represent my personal beliefs. I would have to separate myself from most U.S. evangelicals if I followed through on that principle, and I’m not going to do that.

THE BOURNE LEGACY opens nationwide on August 10th!

The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films.

For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.

THE CAMPAIGN

When long-term congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs plot to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naïve Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), director of the local Tourism Center.

At first, Marty appears to be the unlikeliest possible choice but, with the help of his new benefactors’ support, a cutthroat campaign manager and his family’s political connections, he soon becomes a contender who gives the charismatic Cam plenty to worry about.

As election day closes in, the two are locked in a dead heat, with insults quickly escalating to injury until all they care about is burying each other, in this mud-slinging, back-stabbing, home-wrecking comedy from “Meet the Parents” director Jay Roach that takes today’s political circus to its logical next level. Because even when you think campaign ethics have hit rock bottom, there’s room to dig a whole lot deeper.

The comedy “The Campaign” stars Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudeikis, Dylan McDermott and Katherine LaNasa, with John Lithgow, Dan Aykroyd and Brian Cox. Directed by Jay Roach and written by Chris Henchy & Shawn Harwell, from a story by Adam McKay & Chris Henchy & Shawn Harwell, it is produced by Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Jay Roach and Zach Galifianakis. Amy Sayres, Jon Poll and Chris Henchy serve as executive producers.

The creative filmmaking team includes director of photography Jim Denault (Emmy nominee for HBO’s “Carnivàle”); production designer Michael Corenblith (Oscar® nominee, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and “Apollo 13″); editors Craig Alpert (“Knocked Up,” “Borat”) and Jon Poll (“Meet the Fockers”); and costume designer Daniel Orlandi (“The Blind Side”).

“The Campaign” will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
