The Longest Night Equals Love

Posted on 20 December 2009 by Jason Bayless

Monday, December 21, 2009  is Solstice and the one year anniversary of the life long bond that I made with Mylie T. jm

Last year at this time Mylie T and I were in Scotland having the most amazing time in our lives.  (as you can see in the video below)

So much has happened in the short span of one year.  Today, the day before our anniversary,  I am taking time to reflect on them.  Our experiences together over the past year have been nothing less of magnificent.

I could not think of anyone other than Mylie T that I could or would want to spend the past year and the upcoming years with, because she is my soul mate and my best friend.

Happy Anniversary Mylie – I love you!

TR2N-3D

Posted on 01 April 2009 by

I can’t help but be excited! – All the 3D movies that are coming out – I am just jumping up and down with joy!   All my favorite movies when I was a child are now coming out in 3D.  My Bloody Valentine was re-made in 3D, Dawn of the Dead is going to be re-released in 3D,  and so many more.

There is one movie that I loved to watch that wasn’t a horror movie,  I still watch it about twice a year – that movie is TRON.

Coming in 2010, TRON 2 or TR2N will be released and it will be in 3D.   There is a ‘bootleg’ trailer floating around youtube and the net -but the quality is not that good so I will wait for a better trailer before I post one to this site.  I can say that TR2N looks awesome!

There is not much out about the film yet, but what we do know is that Daft Punk is going to write the soundtrack and Bruce Boxleitner along with Jeff Bridges are returning to TRON.  Bridges will be playing the role of Kevin Flynn.

Ok, so I lied – here is the bootleg teaser for TR2N

Fine Art Portraits

It is rare to find a photographer who still holds onto real creativity.  It seems that so many people who open up a studio get caught up in trying to make ends meet they lose their creative side.  So, it was a real pleasure to meet a photographer that pushes the limits while taking you back to some old school style, Jan Casper Photography is that photographer.

When Mylie and I got married we wanted to fly Jan out to do the photography because we were so impressed with her work.  I think you will be impressed as well, check out some of her work here….

She also has several books that she created that features her work.  Check out her book, ‘Fine Art Portraits

So if you need a photographer – contact Jan – her contact is on her site – Jan Casper Photography and tell her the Zombies sent you.

Day Nine and Ten – Christmas in Necropolis

Posted on 16 January 2009 by

So we made our way to Glasgow the day before X-mas so we made our way to Mono for a bite to eat at this legendary place.   For those who don’t know about Mono, here is a blurb from their website. -

We are renowned for our relaxing atmosphere. a glass cupola creates an airy light space which combined with comfy sofas, basket chairs, wooden tables, potted plants, encourages our customers to spend time having lunch/dinner, drinks, reading or simply listening to the great music provided by inbuilt record shop Monorail.

The food was amazing – out of all the places in Scotland that Mylie and I traveled to, Mono was the one place we ate the most food.  Here is their full menu if you are curious.   – and the photos to tease.  :)

Mylie at Mono Jason's food at Mono Mylie's food at Mono Mylie's coffee

The next morning we woke up to a crisp Christmas morning, the streets were empty so we took off down the streets and made our way to church.

Glasgow Cathedral (Cathedral of Saint Mungo)

Ok, so this may not be the kind of church you would think of going to on Christmas day but this Cathedral is very special in its own way – it offers the gate way to Necropolis – yes, the City of the Dead!

City of the Dead Necropolis with Lady

There are fifty thousand individuals have been buried in approximately 3500 tombs located here.

The early 1800’s saw Glasgow grow as a major industrialised city, with it came a new class of merchants and entrepreneurs who had made vast fortunes in tobacco, spices, coffee and cotton. By 1831 Glasgow’s population had trebled from 70,000 to more than 200,000. The city was flooded by immigrants, most notably Irish and Highlanders, many of whom arrived with little or nothing. The existing urban structure was inadequate and could not cope with such an influx. The working classes suffered considerable conditions of deprivation, exacerbated by inadequate housing, dire poverty, poor sanitation and contaminated water supplies.

This sudden dramatic increase in Glasgow’s population directly affected cemeteries since the aforementioned poverty and squalor resulted in fierce epidemics of cholera and typhus. In the 1830’s over 5,000 people were dying per year and were being buried in unhygienic urban churchyards. Previously burials in the 1800’s outside of a churchyard had been reserved for the unbaptised and lunatics.  Buchan, in his guide to the Cathedral and Necropolis in 1843, puts this change of heart rather more forcefully, “A practice (burial within a churchyard) more revolting to human nature and more destructive to the health of the living could not possibly exist.” Growing concerns with hygiene and sanitation led to the opinion that this policy of burial in urban churchyards was now to be avoided. -Blurb from Glasgow Necropolis History.

So that is how we spent our x-mas in Glasgow – we had a blast.  Now we are off to Aberdeen then we make our way to Edinburgh for  Hogmanay – but I will tell you about that in the next post.

Wedding Day

Posted on 04 January 2009 by

On December 21, 2008, Mylie and I woke up early that morning to get ready for our big day. We were to get married at Duffus Castle on this wonderful day. Our ceremony was set to start at a little before 12:00 noon. Winter Solstice will occur at 12:04 during our ceremony and the sun will set at around 4:30pm. With the sun already hanging low in the sky we made our way to the castle.

Duffus Castle, near Elgin, Moray, Scotland, was a motte-and-bailey castle (one of the oldest mottes in Scotland) and was in use from c.1140 to 1705. At the time of its establishment, it was one of the most secure fortifications in Scotland. At the death of the 2nd Lord Duffus in 1705, the castle had become totally unsuitable as a dwelling and so was abandoned.

The name of Duffus (pronounced DUFF’-US) derives from the lands of Duffus in Morayshire, Scotland. The Name is a compilation of two Gaelic words, dubh and uisg, meaning “darkwater” or “blackwater”. At one time, the region was below sea-level and the Loch of Spynie and stagnant pools of water were a conspicuous feature of the area.

We arrived at the castle and we parked a fair distance due to the motte. As you saw in the video above, as we walked towards the castle we were met with the sound of bagpipes. This was an unexpected surprise from our new found friends Angie, Will and Jackie.
Angie performed the ceremony and Will took care of the details on site and the wedding dinner, which he cooked and it was simply amazing – but I will talk about that later.

It is hard for me to put to words how amazing the things Angie and Will did to make our ceremony beyond perfect. All I can say is that they had no limits to what they would do to make sure our ceremony -before, during and after – would not be out done by anything in this world.

Even after a full day of setting up and performing the ceremony they rushed to their home and prepared a Scottish dinner for us. (You can see the meal in the slide show below) They cooked vegetarian haggis, neps and tatties, the most amazing gravy I have ever had the pleasure of putting on my taste buds and so much more. They left no stone unturned to make us comfortable and happy. Mylie and I are very blessed to have met them and to have them perform our wedding ceremony. If you are getting married I highly recommend them – check out their website – ‘Getting Married in Scotland?

With the video above and the slide show below it would be overkill to revisit the finer details in text form but I will be putting a photo book together soon for family and friends -if you want one, let me know.

And now for the epically cheese-y but fantastically beautiful photo slide show – Enjoy!!

Day Two and Three – Delta Subject to Change

Day Two and Three – Delta Subject to Change

Posted on 20 December 2008 by

Mylie and I arrived at the airport at roughly 4:00 pm on Tuesday the 16th. We checked in our bags and made our way through security without any problems. We were excited that our flight did not leave until 6:30 pm because it gave us time to do a final check over on all the directions and small things we might need for our trip to Scotland. We approached our gate only to find out that the flight was delayed for an hour. We were so happy about our trip the delay didn’t bother us at all. airport

Two and a half hours passed and we hear over the intercom that our flight is going to arrive at a new gate so we had to relocate to the new gate.  As we approached the new gate location we hear a voice on the intercom saying that there is a problem with the plane, there is a light burnt out on the control panel so they need to replace the light before we can take off.  Mylie and I started to worry about our connecting flight into Edinburgh, so she went up to the counter and inquired about if we would make the connecting flight. The Delta employee said, ‘She was sure we could make the connection.’   Eight o’clock rolled around and we are still sitting in the Norfolk airport, stress starts to set in because if we don’t get off the ground by 8:30 pm we will miss our connecting flight to Scotland.

8:45 pm came and we hear the announcement, ‘We are sorry but this flight is now canceled due to problems with the aircraft.’  Mylie raced up to the counter and became the first person in line.  Mylie explained to the Delta employee that we had a connecting flight out of JFK airport and need to get to Scotland. The woman looked at the computer for a few seconds and responded, “We can put you on a flight for arrival in Edinburgh on Dec. 19th or we could issue you a full refund for your tickets.”  Today was the 16th and they said the only flight they had that could get us to Scotland was on the 19th -Three days later! One major problem with this outside of it being three days after our plans to arrive was we had an appointment with the registrar office on the 19th to fill out our paperwork to get married. Scotland requires that you fill out the paper work three days prior to the wedding ceremony, among other ‘odd’ rules for getting married. If we did not attend this appointment we COULD NOT get married.

Mylie explained to the Delta employee that we were getting married and have already invested money into this event and there is no way we could arrive in Scotland on the 19th. The Delta employee offered to give us a refund and when she saw the flames flare up in Mylie’s eyes, the Delta employee offered to make a phone call to see what she could do for us. Hours and hours passed, and Delta kept telling us fly on the 19th or get a refund.

Frustration was building in all of us, Mylie, me and the Delta employee. We were not leaving until we found a compromise to get us to Scotland in a reasonable time. I found it hard to believe that there were no planes flying to Scotland before the 19th and the Delta employee was not doing anything to release this disbelief. One of the Delta phone conversations went like this, “Hi, this is (insert Delta employees name) at Norfolk, I am requesting a tracker. I have a couple here who is getting married in Scotland soon and their flight was just canceled, Yes, No, the flight was canceled due to maintenance problems. I see we have a flight here but the seats are in business class, what?, No, oh, we can’t do that? No, I don’t see any other flight leaving for Scotland. Ok, thanks” She hangs up the phone and looks at us and says, “We can offer you a full refund.”

We did this dance until 12:30 am, then she said, “We can fly you into Amsterdam tomorrow morning then you can fly into Glasgow from there, arriving in Glasgow on the 18th.” After eight hours of sitting in the airport, we finally reached an agreement so we said, “YES, we will do that!” Then the Delta employee gave us a Seven dollar food coupon for any of the shops in the Norfolk airport and booked us a room in the Holiday Inn. So that night, 8 hours later, we sat in a hotel, 20 minutes from our apartment in Norfolk, still in Virginia, shocked by the events of the day and realizing that we had originally planned to fly into Edinburgh so we need to switch our rental car to the Glasgow airport and cancel our room that we had reserved in Ullapool, Scotland. Luckily, Scotland is five hours ahead of us so at 4:00 am, we could call the rental car and the reserved room to cancel and switch everything. After all the details were taken care of and we had everything canceled and switched over, we went to sleep.

We woke up a couple hours later to catch the shuttle to the airport, we got to the gate of our departing flight only to hear the voice over the intercom say, “Attention Customers on flight 5594, we are sorry to announce but this flight is overbooked and we need volunteers to give up their seats.” Did I mention, when we checked in and got our boarding passes, we did not have seat assignments? – We did not have seat assignments, so we were waiting to see if there was going to be room for us on this flight. Something the Delta employee forgot to mention last night.

After the announcement, Mylie and I stared at the counter with anticipation, waiting for someone to approach the counter to give up their seats. Seconds felt like hours, no one came, the Delta employee made a second announcement, then several people walked up and so did Mylie. She was last in line and when she approached the counter she said nervously, ‘I need to get a seat assignment’ There was a pause, the woman behind the counter said, “what is your last name?’ Mylie told her and the Delta woman typed it into her computer screen. The woman looked at her screen, then her face went sad as if she was about to say, “No, I am sorry, I don’t have the assigned seat for you.” The woman looked up from her computer screen and looked at Mylie and said, “Here are your tickets, enjoy your flight!”

RELIEF! We are leaving Norfolk!

One hour and 55 minutes later our plane landed in Atlanta, GA. As soon as Mylie and I got off the plane we raced to the monitors to check the flight status for our Amsterdam flight. It read in big letters, “ON TIME” Mylie looked at me and smiled with a sigh and I said to her, “Lets go get something to eat while we wait three hours for our connecting flight.”

The rest of the trip went without a problem and we arrived in Glasgow.

I will post more tomorrow after the wedding.

I am running a couple of days behind on this travel journal because I have not had internet access until today, but don’t worry, I will bring everyone up to speed.

The special effects and make up for this film is beyond perfect. Just check out these screen grabs.   My favorite is the fake vampire teeth.

It’s the Final Countdown…

Posted on 08 November 2008 by

Ok, you can stop playing air guitar or air synthesizer now.

I mentioned before about the international wedding and I am happy to say we are only six weeks away from our flight to Scotland.

I am so excited about this trip and I am going to let you in on a little more of this wonderful (top secret) trip.

Here are some highlights;

  • will get married to Mylie T
  • will get married to Mylie T on longest night of the year
  • will get married to Mylie T in a 12th century castle. (c. 1151)
  • will eat vegan haggis – for those who don’t know, non-vegan haggis is sheep’s ‘pluck’ (heart, liver and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally boiled in the animal’s stomach for approximately three hours.  I will have to get back to you on what vegan haggis is. :)
  • the ceremony maybe featured in an online magazine (they said they wanted to do a story, so only time will tell.)
  • will spend x-mas traveling across Scotland
  • will spend New Years in Edinburgh -
check out this video from last year

  • will drink more whiskey than I ever thought I could
  • will create a professional photo book with DVD included of the full trip and ceremony for all friends and family. (Special request will be made as well – all you need to do is Subscribe to Psychosomatic Rants by Email and keep your eyes open for the alert to place your request.

So the count down has begun and everything is in order, now all we can do is wait with anticipation and count down the days until Mylie T and Jason Bayless are married in Scotland.

A Cabbage Patch of Craziness

Posted on 04 November 2008 by

I have not been able to access a computer the last couple of days, I am back. Oh, how I missed the internet. :)

I just got back from Atlanta and I had a great time.

So in short, here is what I did for my Halloween.

Ate some awesome food from Soul Veg. Here are some photos.

Then we went to a wedding…

And ate more food…

and cake.

After stuffing ourselves with all the great food, Mylie had this crazy idea to go visit a place that she had always wanted to see since she was a small child. Not wanting Mylie to miss out on a childhood dream, I was totally excited about visiting this place. I could have never imagined what I was getting myself into – You could combine all the haunted houses together, you could watch the election polls and see McCain win the election, and nothing could be as creepy and scary as what this place had to offer.

Let me start the next paragraph with this video clip that I took as I walked into this place.

As you can see, I was in some kind of twilight zone of stuffed babies that were born from a tree surrounded by magical crystals and some kind of magic juice. Sure, I had a ton of questions but every time I went to ask these questions I was stopped by witnessing something so odd, so bizarre, so insane that it made me loose my train of thought and force me to question what I was seeing. I saw grown people, yes adult over the age of 40 years old walking around carrying these stuffed babies and talking to them, patting them, talking to them, touching them as if they were real, as if they were alive.

The thing that pushed me over the top was a family who came into this place. It was a little boy and his mom and dad. As the family walked into the premature baby room in this hospital, the mom leaned closer to her son and said, “Do you see these babies, they are premature – just like you when you were born.” I almost lost it and ran out of the room trying to fight the laughter. As I ran around the corner, I heard several people say the baby is ready, they are about to give birth. I saw a large group of people gathering around a tree so I broke out the video camera and this is what I saw…

PS – CONGRADS OBAMA!!

The International Wedding

Posted on 16 August 2008 by

Today was a good day – Mylie and I wrapped up some of the ‘almost final’ details for our trip to Scotland.

To bring you up to speed if you already know. Mylie asked me to marry her – you can read about it here in the blog post, ‘Love and Chaos Took Over the World-My World.’

Anyway, today we got our International Drivers Permit and over the past couple of months we have been working with a wonderful woman over in Scotland about setting up the details and the wedding plans.

Dl.jpg

I don’t want to give away too much information about what we are doing and how we are doing it because I want to surprise you and my family with videos and photos after the fact.

But I will give you a sneak peak photo at one of the places that will play a major part in the wedding.
