Josh’s Movie Review: It’s Alive (2009)

itsalive People may not agree with this review due to the fact that I don’t really have anything bad to say about this remake of the 1974 horror film which holds the number 43 spot on Bravo’s 100 Scariest Movie Moments.  I do have to admit that I have not seen the original so I have no bias or grounds to compare the two films. Which is a good thing because if I had seen the original I probably would have a different view of the latter film.

“It’s Alive” begins with Lenore (Bijou Phillips- Hostel 2, Almost Famous, Havoc) packing up her things, and leaving school due to the fact that she is pregnant. Her friends think taking the wrong path and that she should not give up on school. Disregarding her friends suggestions she moves in with her boyfriend Frank and his disabled brother, in order to prepare for the birth of their child. Almost as soon as Lenore moves into Frank’s house things start going wrong. The baby comes a few months early, but is healthy as can be. While in the delivery room the Lenore is given a sedative and the doctors proceed with a C-section. After the delivery, we find out that all of the doctors have been brutally murdered.

As we go further into the film we find out that the baby is a blood thirsty demon and needs to feed on blood to grow big and strong. We find out that Lenore had tried to take drugs to abort the pregnancy, and this leads the viewer to believe that the drugs had an effect on the baby.  I thought the movie was executed pretty well, it delves into Lenore being protective of her baby, so she cleans up his bloody messes, and gives him his baths, just so he can get all bloody again.  After all the animals in the area are gone the baby (Daniel, played by BAD CGI) moves on to Lenore’s friends and loved ones. Bringing the movie to a “burning” conclusion.

I enjoyed “It’s Alive” the only thing that really got to me was the CGI used in the part of Daniel, it looked too fake. It has some good bloody gore moments and kinda freaked me out a few times. But overall I would give the film a 6 out of 10, not the best movie I have ever seen but definitely not the worst.
