A Forgotten Past – Remembered

Posted on 28 June 2008 by Jason Bayless

There are things that you forget about or a least don’t experience as often as you should, but when you do experience it (again) you ask yourself, ‘Why did I ever stop doing this?’

Today was one of those ‘forgotten’ experiences. I remember growing up in Texas, my family had a huge garden that offered everything from okra, jalapeƱo peppers, onions, etc. You name it we grew it. I also remember going out with my grandmother to pick wild grapes, plums, and berries so her and my mom would make all types of jellies and pies. It was so good.

It seems sometimes that I have lost the thoughts of how I grew up and how my family provided us with food. Now, I go to the grocery store, fast food restaurant or any other place that keeps me out of the fields and most of the time out of the kitchen.

We get sucked into this mass commercialism and the ease of not having to think where our food comes from and what we are losing by buying massed produced products.

Companies take full advantage of our newfound consumerism that we blindly follow. Take a look at this box of corn flakes that I saw today – Is this really a selling point – is the love of our country really going to be the driving force to purchase this product?

I think if we really want to buy into old glory, as it seems corn flakes wants us to do we should support the local farmers and companies.

Places like the farmers market.

Mylie T and I went and stocked up on some wonderful looking produce.

Now its time to eat! :)
